Searching for the perfect DJ for your wedding can be a daunting process. We’re providing you with a list of common mistakes made by Brides & Grooms when choosing wedding entertainment:
10) Not Taking First Impressions into consideration.
The first interaction with your potential DJ is usually made over the phone when arranging a consultation. How well do they speak? How is their enunciation? Do they have a pleasing voice? This person will be the MC of your reception, announcing your introductions and entertaining your guests for the entire evening, so ensure they come across professionally.
9) Hiring A DJ That Gives The Same Performance At Every Party.
Does your DJ give the same performance at every function for every couple that hires him or does he reflect each couples’ personality and desires? Be sure your DJ can play to your unique set of guests.
8) Basing Your Decision On Equipment.
Anyone can go out and purchase top of the line equipment. It is very important that your DJ does carry the best of equipment but if that is the focal point of their marketing, find out why it isn’t their reputation or skill set.
7) Not Going Over Their Back-up Plan
Is his back-up plan organized and does it supply an equally qualified professional? What about his equipment? A catastrophic equipment failure the day of your wedding will not only affect the DJ but your entire reception as well.
6) Not Guaranteeing Who Your Actual DJ Will Be
Ensure the DJ you want to work with and are meeting is the actual one that shows up to do your wedding. Some companies book your business then send a “fill in” DJ to perform at your wedding that may or may not be qualified to do so.
5) Choosing A DJ With A Lack Of Versatility
Does your DJ only do weddings? Ask if they have performed at corporate events, school functions, or other cultural parties such as Quinceaneras and Bar Mitzvahs. Versatility is only acquired through experience and this will reflect the depth of your DJ.
4) Hiring A DJ That Doesn’t Interact With Your Guests
Does your DJ have the experience and ability to interact with your guests and ensure they keep the energy going throughout the entire reception. Your DJ should have an arsenal of tricks up his sleeve to keep the party going even when there is a lull in the party.
3) Waiting Too Long To Hire The Professional Entertainer You Want
It’s difficult enough finding a DJ you like. Don’t go through all the trouble of finding the right person and procrastinate on booking them for your wedding. Most good DJs with a great reputation are booked at least a year in advance. As soon as you make that connection act on it and secure your date.
2) Not Checking Your DJ’s References
Are they recommended by facilities in your surrounding area? If not, ask why.
1) Hiring An Amateur Or Part Time DJ
Don’t put the most important day of your life in the hands of an amateur offering “amazing deals”, or worse, your “friend that has been DJing as a hobby for 10 years”. Don’t have your reception ruined by someone that is not qualified or equipped to entertain your guests or provide a variety of great music. Leave this to a reputable professional that can back up their work with solid recommendations.

On Saturday Night I was DJ at Barefoot Boogie NYC. It was such a fun night and I really felt the vibe and connected with the dancers in a way that inspires me to continue to be a DJ and work even harder to improve. Good dancers deserve good music and energy to facilitate movement, dance and community. Professional DJs do not always get the opportunity to share their musical tastes and flavors. We are typically directed by the needs and wants of the Brides, Grooms and Party Planners that hire us to perform at the Weddings and Parties. When I am hired by a lounge or club, I typically have more freedom to open my DJ Music Library of more than 40,000 songs.

I still get excited every time I am scheduled to DJ at Barefoot Boogie NYC! It surprises me each event, because in my head, one of these days I am not going to be so excited and pumped for the gig. I was introduced to Lindsey Stirling and her music about a year ago. I am a member of Conscious Dance Deejays and there is where I was pointed to her music.

For those who may not of heard of Lindsey Stirling, she is amazing! I love her music, mission and intention as an artist and woman.
Lindsey Stirling (born on September 21, 1986) is an American violinist, musician, dancer, performance artist, and composer. She presents choreographed violin performances, both live and in music videos found on her YouTube channel, Lindseystomp, which she introduced in 2007. In 2010, Stirling was a quarter-finalist on the fifth season of America’s Got Talent, where she was known as the Hip Hop Violinist.
Since 2010, Lindsey Stirling has released a self-titled album, an EP, and several singles. She performs a variety of music styles, from classical to pop and hip-hop to dubstep. Aside from original work, her discography contains covers of songs by other musicians and various soundtracks.
In December 2012, YouTube announced that Lindsey Stirling’s song, “Crystallize”, was the #8 top viewed video of 2012 with over 42 Million views. Stirling recently completed collaborations with Youtube Artists Tyler Ward and Pentatonix.
Lindsey Stirling was born in Orange County, California and grew up in Gilbert, Arizona. She moved to Provo, Utah to attend Brigham Young University to study therapeutic recreation. She resided in Provo until December 2012, then moved back to Arizona to be closer to her family.
At the age of 5, after being influenced by the classical music records played by her father, Stirling began to study the violin. She took private lessons for 12 years. When she was 16, she joined a rock band with four friends called Stomp on Melvin. As part of her experience with Stomp on Melvin, Stirling wrote a solo violin rock song, and her performance helped her to win the state title ofArizona‘s Junior Miss and claim the Spirit Award in the America’s Junior Miss Finals competition. Lindsey Stirling was also a member of the Charlie Jenkins Band.
In 2010, at the age of 23,Lindsey Stirling was a quarter-finalist on the fifth season of America’s Got Talent, where she was described as a “hip hop violinist”. Stirling’s performances were dubbed “electrifying” by the judges, and won the acclaim of the audience, but after she attempted to step up the dance level in her quarter-final performance judge Piers Morgan told her, “You’re not untalented, but you’re not good enough to get away with flying through the air and trying to play the violin at the same time”. Sharon Osbourne commented, “You need to be in a group. … What you’re doing is not enough to fill a theater in Vegas”. In her blog, Stirling confided, “I was devastated at the results … It was painful, and a bit humiliating; however, I had to relearn where it was that I drew my strength”. Stirling decided to continue to embrace her unique style of performance, promoting herself on the Internet. Shortly after her performance on America’s Got Talent, cinematographer Devin Graham contacted her in hopes of making a YouTube video together. The video boosted Stirling’s popularity, and she began making music videos for her YouTube channel regularly. Graham has filmed almost all of her videos, while Stirling often does backup camera work and assists with his music videos. Stirling’s YouTube channel, Lindseystomp, which she created in 2007 and which is named after her first band “Stomp on Melvin”, is the main repository for her music videos. During 2011, the channel rapidly gained popularity and has over 242 million total views and over 1.5 million subscribers, as of February 2013. Her music is featured on Pandora, Spotify, and Last.FM. Lindsey Stirling also created a second YouTube channel, LindseyTime, in September 2012, in which she posts videos related to her life, vlogs, behind-the-scenes content, etc.

Lindsey Stirling has experimented in combining violin playing with hip hop and dubstep. Stirling’s collaborations with other musicians and singers have included Shaun Barrowes (on “Don’t Carry It All” – The Decemberists), Jake Bruene and Frank Sacramone (on “Party Rock Anthem” – LMFAO), Tay Zonday (on “Mama Economy”), Peter Hollens (on “Skyrim” and later with “Game of Thrones”), Alisha Popat (on “We Found Love”), John Allred (on “Tomb”), Kurt Schneider and Amiee Proal (on A Thousand Years), Megan Nicole (on “Starships”), and The Piano Guys (on “Mission Impossible”). I was doing some research today and thought it would be fun to review the Billboard All-Time Hot 100 top songs of Billboard’s 50th Anniversary.
The songs in the “50th Anniversary” charts had to appear on the Hot 100 in order to be counted. This may create some confusion (for example: many great country artists and songs are not on the “50th Anniversary” chart because, while very popular on the country charts they didn’t cross over to the Hot 100). Also, keep in mind the Hot 100 started in August 1958 so any prior songs are not listed, including some popular Elvis Presley songs.
The “50th Anniversary” chart is based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100. The artist chart utilizes the same methodology, with weighted points applied to all titles charted by each artist during that 50-year span. They are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at number one earning the greatest value and weeks at number one hundred earning the least.
Hot 100’s 50th Anniversary award relative points for every week that a title spent on the chart, regardless of rank. For the Hot 100’s 50th Anniversary, Billboard’s charts department ensured a more balanced representation of hits from all 50 years, by analyzing the length of chart runs in earlier decades, as well as the average weeks that titles spent in the top 10 and at number one. Weights for earlier spans were then formulated, to compensate for the shorter chart runs that titles experienced before the 1991 conversion to precise and objective sales and radio data from Nielsen Music.
I am very surprised by all of the top ten, except maybe “Hey Jude” by The Beatles. It is not that I think they are not good or popular songs, I just did not conceptualize them as the ones that have had the most success on Billboard’s Hot 100 Charts of all time.
At the other end, I would have thought Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” would have been near the top of the list. The exclusion of songs like “Stairway To Heaven” by Led Zeppelin, as described below, stand out as clear missing by popularity over time.
Prior to December 1998, songs did not appear on the Billboard Hot 100 until a retail single became available (which, incidentally, is why hits like Led Zeppelin‘s “Stairway to Heaven” and No Doubt‘s “Don’t Speak” never appeared on the Hot 100). In earlier years, retail singles came to market fairly early in a song’s life-usually shortly after, or even before, a song came to radio.
But, during the 1990s, when labels would strategize number-one chart bows by significant hits, the retail release of some priority singles were withheld until radio audience reached maximum levels. Although some of these songs spent significant numbers of weeks at number one or in the top ten, the delay of the sales component ultimately shortened the spans these songs would spend on the chart. With the new methodology rewarding points for a song’s entire chart run, rather than confining points to weeks spent in the top ten, the shorter chart lives recorded by the songs that debuted at number one impact their all-time standings.

I was updating my listing on Gigmasters tonight, and noticed this helpful piece of information on hiring your Wedding DJ:

This is the essential fact I wanted to draw attention to. Your Wedding DJ is who sets the mood and ‘vibe’ of your Wedding. It appears from the outside that the Wedding DJ that scratched and make cool sounds is the one that will give you the best value and entertainment for your Wedding. This is not always so, in fact, I would say that a Wedding DJ that focuses on ‘WOWing’ you and your guests has forgotten that you are the spotlight and should be, not the Wedding DJ
An exceptional Wedding DJ has mastered the art of providing the music and entertainer but still not take the shine from The Bride or Groom. It is your Wedding and you are the what and why everybody is gathered. An exceptional Wedding DJ knows how to stay out of the way while keeping the pulse on what music, genre and vibe is next for the unique and fun Wedding you are expecting. A good Wedding DJs are not cheap like we were years ago. Many top notch Rhode Island Wedding DJs, and even more so for New York Wedding DJs, cost anywhere from $850-$2700 today. Even more if you are into all the bells and whistles that can at times take the focus off you and your Wedding.
Find a Wedding DJ that is excited about working with you to co-create an exceptional Wedding together. I came across this article about Wedding Brides yesterday and found it fascinating. I do not know if I agree with all that is written by I thought it would be interesting conversation. I have copied the bulk of the text below with some commments. i have also added links to content that is referred to by the original author.
“I’ve been in the wedding business a while…over 12 years, in fact…and in the process I’ve crossed paths with more than a few brides. There are a few misconceptions about them that I simply must expose. *deep breath*
WARNING: Prepare yourself for a healthy dose of sarcasm. All those lacking a sense of humor, turn back now.
Of course, they do! They know what their Knottie friends have told them. They know what the media says about wedding rip offs. They know exactly what to expect from watching wedding reality TV.
Shame on you for thinking they don’t know anything! For shame.
Speaking as a tomboy who absolutely refused to wear a dress until the age of 10, and who only grew her hair long because she got tired of the question, “Are you a boy or a girl?” I can assure you that all brides do NOT want to be a princess.
In fact, I bet if we took a survey at least 75% of brides get nauseous at the thought of a Cinderella ball gown and a tiara. You might remember that the next time you want to sprinkle fairy dust all over her day.
Maybe I’m handing in all my chick cards here, but that was definitely NOT the case for me. Sure, I played house and restaurant and doctor (woah! don’t go there) like other little girls, but playing at my dream wedding was never part of the picture.
When little girls grow up and get engaged, they are just as likely to be shell shocked at the mere thought of having to plan a wedding as they are to be sticker shocked by the price tag attached to their fantasy.
This is definitely not true. The groom can also be, “the bride,” and this isn’t exclusive to same sex weddings, either.
You know who I’m talking about. He emails you 15 times a day about the most minute details of the wedding, shows up with his own wedding planning binder, and on the wedding day, he wears makeup.
Be sensitive to the fact that the bride you’re working with might not be who you think.
While it may be true that many brides adore the browsing, shopping and dreaming that comes with planning a wedding, they are just as overwhelmed and stalled by CHOICE as the rest of us humans. When it’s too difficult to decide, they opt not to decide.
How many brides have exclaimed to me six months before the wedding, “Why can’t I just show up?”
Brides love the idea of choice, but give them too many pretty things to choose between, and they will choose nothing.
Ask a bride what her dream wedding will be like and 9 times out of 10 she’ll say, “Simple, elegant and unique. Something that’s really US.”
And yet…well, you’ve been to a wedding or two. They wear a white dress (strapless, no doubt!), walk down an aisle, share a first dance to a (corny, predictable) love song and dab cute dollops of icing on the groom’s nose. When they want to do something “different” they imitate last year’s trend-setting weddings on Style Me Pretty.
Yep, they’re original, all right.
Every bride wants to FEEL unique and special on her wedding day, but her choices are more likely to follow the herd.
The first thing she asks, whether in an email or on the phone, “How much do you cost?”
Ah, ha! With so many more important factors to consider, that’s what she asks. Therefore all she must care about is price.
Not so, weedhopper. Not so.
In surveys conducted by the Wedding Report, when asked if price was the deciding factor when hiring a wedding vendor, 80% of brides said NO.
Shock and dismay! If price isn’t the most important, what is?
She wants to make sure she’s getting quality first. Then price becomes a factor.”
Interesting stuff yes?
Numbers six and seven are the two that stand-out to me to offer perspective.
I think most Brides do want their wedding to be unique and different and are realistic enough to recognize that maybe just a few select items may be unique. Brides today are very savvy, at least min sour. You know more information about Weddings than brides have ever due to your time on the internet and forums. Of course,not all the information you get is true but it is still part of the knowledge base you accumulate to make your decisions on when, who, what and where. My experience is that Brides that do not know a lot about Weddings, ask professionals like myself to become more informed. I do my best to offer them honest and real advise and they appreciate the insights and experience I can share with them.
I am enough of a realist to know that what I do as a Rhode Island Wedding DJ is very similar to what many of the best Wedding DJs int eh area do as well. What I can offer that is unique is a guarantee and my experienced, fu and passionate personality. I also created The StoryBook for those who want to make their Wedding actually unique and personal.
However, I totally agree that most of my Brides want a simple and elegant Wedding that has their style and personality all over it. It should be that way, it’s your Wedding! I think too many Wedding vendors try to force themselves into the center of your Wedding as if they are the main attraction of the day. It infuriates me!
This is only half true and half BS. I have worked with enough of you to know that you want a fair price, excellent quality and to make sure your voice is of the highest importance. In short, you want value. I have not yet met a Bride that did not want me and all the other Wedding vendors to get paid what we are worth, as long as they can afford it. I think there is a mjor difference between being cheap and being smart. I am no different than of you; I don’t not want overpay for anything, but genuinely want to make sure those who are talented, work hard and offer excellent service get what they deserve.
I find excellent service, professionalism and creativity seem to be what most Brides want, then price becomes the factor. I think you ask about price first because you don’t know where else to begin our conversation. And let’s be honest, who does not care abut price besides the Jimmy Fallon TV commercials! Please let me know if I a wrong on this one.
Which of the myths about Brides do you think is most accurate and most erroneous?
From the first time I heard Macklemore Thrift Shop, I knew this was a song I would play again and again, and it would be a hit. I did not know how much of a hit Macklemore Thrift Shop would be though. As someone who enjoys shopping at thrift shops and vintage clothing stores, I am so happy there is a Pop Culture song that honors this fun, creative and well, thrifty way to shop.
I typically try my best to not review songs that have graphic language but in this case I made an exception because the video is hysterical and the curses actually add the song, not just make it ‘cool’.
“Macklemore Thrift Shop illustrates the speaker’s interest in buying cheap clothing from thrift shops, disdaining designer labels and trends. He claims to enjoy donning “your grandad’s clothes” and impulsively buying something just because “it was 99 cents”. Macklemore spoke to MTV News about the meaning of the song: “Rappers talk about, oh I buy this and I buy that, and I spend this much money and I make it rain, and this type of champagne and painting the club, and this is the kind of record that’s the exact opposite,” he explained. “It’s the polar opposite of it. It’s kind of standing for like let’s save some money, let’s keep some money away, let’s spend as little as possible and look as fresh as possible at the same time.” Upon asked why he thought the track was so successful, Macklemore replied: “I think hip-hop goes in waves, and it’s something that’s different. It’s a concept. It’s obviously against the status quo of what people normally rap about. This is a song that goes against all of that. How much can you save? How fresh can you look by not looking like anybody else? And on top of that, you have an infectious beat and a hook that gets stuck in people’s heads.” The song has been called a critique of the product placement common in modern hip hop.”
Macklemore Thrift Shop is a song by Seattle-based American rapper Macklemore and his producer Ryan Lewis. It was released as the fifth and final single from their collaborative debut studio album The Heist (2012) on October 8, 2012 and features vocals from Wanz. Despite being released on Macklemore’s independent label, with distribution by ADA, the single was met with unexpected commercial success, also a sleeper hit, peaking on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 1 while selling over 3 million copies in total, also reaching number 1 in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, France, Denmark, Australia and New Zealand. The song is the first independently-distributed title to top the Billboard Digital Songs since “We Are the World 25 for Haiti” in February 2010. It is also the second independent song in history to achieve the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, nearly 20 years after Lisa Loeb‘s “Stay (I Missed You)” in 1994. A music video was released to accompany the song’s release.
What could make me happier as a DJ than a song that reaches Billboard #1 about a thrift shop, being unique on an independent label! Thank you Macklemore Thrift Shop for providing some hope to the American record industry.

It iso much fun adding new, legal DJ music every week directly from Prime Cuts Music. Having a DJ Music library of over 40,000 songs has taken quite a while and feels great to be at this milestone, but more to add every week from Prime Cuts Music and for individual Brides, Grooms and Party Planners for Weddings, Parties and Events. I am currently working on a playlist for an upcoming 50th Birthday Party for a Latina, a Professor at Rutgers State University and an Interfaith Minister. She is a great woman as a bonus! She wants a nice mix of Latin Music- Salsa, Bachata and Meringue and English Music from The Big Bands to Michael Buble with The Eurythmics and Duran Duran, and some current tunes like Macklemore “Thrift Shop” and will.i.am and Britney Spears “Scream and Shout”. Should be a really fun Party!
