DJ 80’s Dance Party Mix

DJ 80’s Dance Party Mix was created due to receiving more requests for 80’s Music than usual. I am getting the feeling that 80’s Music is becoming the choice of music for folks who want to find a happy medium between music of today for younger people and music that those who were born earlier will still appreciate and be able to party and have fun with.

I have to say, there were many songs I wanted to include in this mix that just didn’t make it. Maybe there will be a DJ 80’s Dance Party Mix II…

Maroon 5 One More Night

Maroon 5 keeps finding a way to blend their unique style into fascinating pop hits. In this age of sound-alike pop stars, it is refreshing to hear a band create their own sound and be successful to a broad range of listeners like Maroon 5 One More Night.

Maroon 5 One More Night Music Video

Maroon 5 One More Night have listed some of their musical influences as Prince, Michael Jackson, The Police, Oasis, Talking Heads and Shabba Ranks, as well as Stevie Wonder. You can here all these influences in their music and style clearly. It is not a surprise that they produce a poppy, dance-oriented version of Modern Rock with a semi-Reggae beat loosely infused. As a funny side note, the Los Angeles band’s previous name was ‘Kara’s Flowers’ due to the band having a “collective crush” on a girl they all knew. This may be part of the reason they write songs predominantly about love.

DJ Rock Party Mix

Another professional DJ music mix to add to the collection. The DJ Rock Party Mix was a mix I created for a festival I could not make it to due to another professional DJ gig, but was requested to provide DJ music. I knew there was one set that needed Party Rock and the DJ Rock Party Mix seemed to do the trick. It was a fundraiser for a non-profit I wanted to support as a professional DJ. Hope you enjoy it!

Psy Gangnam Style

Recently, I was the professional Wedding DJ for a multicultural couple; the Bride’s family is from Korea and she has embraced her Korean and American roots and heritage. During the reception, I thought it would be fun to play a K-Pop song that was popular in Korea while I was there by a group called Jewel named, “Baby One More Time”. Of course, everyone got up to dance and a guy who is not Korean from Brooklyn ran over and asked if I had “That new song from Korea that is a hit in the clubs?”. It took a minute for us to figure out what song he was talking about and it was Psy Gangnam Style! I played it immediately following and it was a total hit! Everybody was having so much fun.

I used to live in South Korea and love the people and the culture. I was an English Teacher at a local elementary school filled with adorable, eager children.  Since I have returned to The States, I have kept my eyes open for anything that reminds me of my time in Korea, especially the food and people. Great dance music is very common and part of Korean Culture.

For those who don’t know what Psy Gangnam Style is about, Gangnam is a section of Seoul known for hipsters and folks who think classy is defined by what you show, your clothes and your car.  Psy had created Psy Gangnam Style as a satire to make fun of them and the lifestyle they exhibit. It is really funny if you know anything about Korean culture and the video is a total hoot. Enjoy!

DJ Urban and Old Skool Mix 2010

A friend of mine was Security at a small club in a country club in Freehold, NJ I was professional DJ during the Winter of 2010/2011. He seemed to not appreciate most of the DJs there but we became friends quickly. He shared that I was the one professional DJ he heard during his eighteen years as Bouncer and Security at many clubs that the professional DJ understood the concept of diversity in music to build a good client base at a club. I used to laugh when he said this, because it seems so obvious to me but not to many professional DJs. I do not say this with arrogance, I truly just don’t get it why so may DJs clutch to one genre so fiercely.

Before I left the club, I made him a mix of his favorite songs and think it is a fun mix of music from that year including R&B, Dance, Hip Hop and Pop with some old classics as well. That was the basis for the DJ Urban and Old Skool Mix 2010.

Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros Home

A couple of weeks ago, I was MC & DJ for a Wedding in Westchester County, NY. The Bride and Groom had chosen Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros Home as a Bridal Party Dance Song after their First Dance. It was so much fun! Everybody of all ages ended up dancing, whistling and singing on the dance floor! It was one of the most fun experiences I’ve had as a professional Wedding DJ in quite a while. I will recommend this song for future events now that I know even folks that are not interested in this particular musical style will be able to join in and have fun.

How Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros Home Came To Be

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros is an American band led by Alex Ebert, who is also a vocalist of the power pop group Ima Robot. Their first show as a full band was played July 18, 2007 at The Troubadour in West Hollywood, California. Their first full-length recording, Up from Below, was released digitally on July 7, 2009 and physically on July 14, 2009 on Community Records. Their second full-length album, Here, was released on May 29, 2012.

Ebert began work on a book about a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe after breaking up with his girlfriend, joining a 12-step program for addiction, and moving into a house with his lifelong friend Nicholas Raymond Kellen. According to Ebert, Sharpe “was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind…but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love.” Ebert later met singer Jade Castrinos outside a downtown Los Angeles cafe.

David Guetta Featuring Sia Titanium Music Video

The video for David Guetta Featuring Sia Titanium is about a boy with supernatural powers. The song features lyrics directed at self-esteem and strength including the chorus:

“I’m bulletproof, nothing to lose

fire away, fire away

ricochet, you take your aim

fire away, fire away

You shoot me down,

but I won’t fall

I am titanium

you shoot me down,

but I won’t fall

I am titanium.

David Guetta Featuring Sia Titanium is a ballad which draws from the genres of pophouse and urbandance. The song’s lyrics are about inner strength. Sia’s vocals on David Guetta Featuring Sia Titanium received comparisons to those by Fergie and the song was also musically compared to Coldplay‘s work. Critics were positive towards the song and noted it as one of the standout tracks from Nothing but the Beat. “Titanium” attained top 10 positions in several major music markets, including Australia, Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. In the United Kingdom, it peaked at number one, becoming Guetta’s fifth number-one single on the chart and Sia’s first. The song’s accompanying music video premiered on December 21, 2011 but does not feature appearances by Guetta and Sia. Instead, the video focuses on a young boy, played by actor Ryan Lee, with supernatural powers. Along with other songs, David Guetta Featuring Sia Titanium was pulled from radio stations in the US after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Eric Church Springsteen

I am glad that Eric Church Springsteen shared his version of those same experiences in such a thoughtful and sentimental manner. I am sure Bruce Springsteen smiled the first time he heard it.

Eric Church Springsteen Music Video

Growing-up in New Jersey, Bruce Springsteen was a significant part of my teens and twenties. I can reflect on song after song and let the memories connected to each one come alive and bring me back to the time and place of the initial experiences. I was fortunate enough to see him perform live about ten times between 1980-1985. There were definitely some, “Funny how a melody sounds like a memory. Like the soundtrack to a July Saturday night. Springsteen” moments, more than I can remember at this minute. He as much as any musical artist has imprints all over my high school and college days. He was not my favorite artist to listen to but seemed to effect me in a way few others could. And those four and five hours shows were so unique and forceful. We all left exhausted as members of the audience, can’t imagine how he must have felt after those performances.

Eric Church Springsteen Lyrics

To this day when I hear that song
I see you standin’ there on that lawn
Discount shades, store bought tan
Flip flops and cut-off jeans

Somewhere between that setting sun
I’m on fire and born to run
You looked at me and I was done
And we’re, we’re just getting started

I was singin’ to you, you were singin’ to me
I was so alive, never been more free
Fired up my daddy’s lighter and we sang
Ooohh

Stayed there ’til they forced us out
And took the long way to your house
I can still hear the sound of you sayin’ don’t go

When I think about you, I think about 17
I think about my old jeep
I think about the stars in the sky
Funny how a melody sounds like a memory
Like the soundtrack to a July Saturday night
Springsteen

I bumped into you by happenstance
You probably wouldn’t even know who I am
But if I whispered your name
I bet there’d still be a spark

Back when I was gasoline
And this old tattoo had brand new ink
And we didn’t care what your mom would think
About your name on my arm

Baby is it spring or is it summer
The guitar sound or the beat of that drummer
You hear sometimes late at night
On your radio

Even though you’re a million miles away
When you hear Born in the USA
You relive those glory days
So long ago

When you think about me, do you think about 17
Do you think about my old jeep
Think about the stars in the sky
Funny how a melody sounds like a memory
Like a soundtrack to a July Saturday night
Springsteen

Woah-oh-oh-oh

Ellie Goulding Lights

Ellie Goulding Lights was released in North America on August 20, 2011. One year later it is finally at the top of the charts. Ellie Goulding Lights was the third slowest song to reach the Top 40 by a female artist. Ellie Goulding Lights took nineteen weeks to make it to #40 and the longest ever to reach the top five.

Ellie Goulding Lights Music Video

Elena Jane “Ellie” Goulding is a British singer-songwriter who has enjoyed significant success in the U.K. and finally in The USA and Canada. She has won many awards in the U.K. and achieved critical acclaim to match her popularity. The music video was filmed nearly two years ago before the release of the single “Your Song”, a cover of the Elton John classic, “Lights” was released as a single months later. At one point it was not included in the album titled Lights and then the eventual EP Bright Lights in the U.K. The North American version does include the song on the album.

Ellie Goulding Lights Story

Ellie Goulding Lights received mostly positive reviews from critics. Horatia Harrod of The Daily Telegraph commented that the song is “threaded with dark thoughts, but set to an airy pop production bordering on polite. Her voice is the real star. She has the magical ability, not unlike her heroine, Björk, to sing with a sort of controlled tremulousness: her voice aches with vulnerability but never breaks.” The Guardian reviewer Johnny Dee described the song as “a welcome return to her patented folky-pop-with-some-tasteful-drum-and-bass-wobble sound”. Genevieve Koski of The A.V. Club was also positive of the song, giving it an A− and praising the song’s “organic-sounding” production and Goulding’s “ethereal, restrained” vocals, while Steven Hyden of The A.V. Club gave it a C, claiming that Goulding sounds too “restrained” and “aloof to the point of emotional constipation”.[15] About.com‘s Bill Lamb rated the song three-and-a-half out of five stars, calling it “a pleasing, catchy slice of electro-pop” and noting that “Goulding’s voice has an edge of sadness and vulnerability that sets the song apart from standard dance pop”, but concluded, “In a pop music world dominated by distinctive vocalists, it is too easy for a song like ‘Lights’ to feel polite and get lost in the shuffle.”[

Professional DJs can play Ellie Goulding Lights in many different situations since it matches several genre and demographics.
