Amazing version #4! I loved Landslide when it was first released by Fleetwood Mac in 1975 written by Stevie Nicks.  I had the opportunity to see Fleetwood Mac perform Landslide outdoors twice in the summer of 1977 on their Rumors Tour. I had such a crush on Stevie:)

U2 Beautiful Day

U2 Beautiful Day. On this day, December 9th, in the year 2000, U2 made their first appearance on Saturday Night Live. As much as they are viewed as a commercial band today, that was not always the case. In fact, U2 was a band that started by Larry Mullen, Jr, the band’s drummer at age fourteen. He had posted a flier at his school looking for guys to start a band.  The other three members that are still with the band showed-up along with a few other guys who either chose not to stick with the group or faded away. Their first meeting and rehearsal was in his kitchen. It was not till four years later that they received their first recording contract and were not very successful.

An interesting note about the band. After their second album, The Edge, Bono and Mullen joined a Christian rock band named “Shalom Fellowship” and U2 almost broke-up over the spiritual direction of the band, long before U2 Beautiful Day.

U2 Beautiful Day is the first track from their 2000 album, All That You Can’t Leave Behind, and it was released as the album’s lead single. It was a commercial success, helping launch the album to multi-platinum status, and is one of U2’s biggest hits to date. Like many tracks from All That You Can’t Leave Behind, U2 Beautiful Day harkens back to the group’s past sound. The tone of The Edge‘s guitar was a subject of debate amongst the band members, as they disagreed on whether he should use a sound similar to that from their early career in the 1980s. Lead vocalist Bono explained that the upbeat track is about losing everything but still finding joy in what one has.

U2 Beautiful Day received positive reviews, and it became their fourth number-one single in the UK and their first number-one in the Netherlands. The song peaked at number 21 in the United States, the band’s highest position since “Discothèque” in 1997. In2001, the song won three Grammy Awards for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The group has played U2 Beautiful Day at every one of their concerts since the song’s 2001 live debut on the Elevation Tour.

Apparently Mick Jagger is ending the year strong between the Maroon 5 hit, “Moves Like Jagger” and his performance on will.i.am feat. Mick Jagger & Jennifer Lopez T.H.E. The Hardest Ever, somehow he is back in the limelight again. What may be more amazing is that he is sixty-eight years old! How has he lasted this long with the lifestyle he has chosen? Is it true that last year he was quoted saying that he has a daily meditation and Buddhist practice? Is that the source of his youthful existence? His short piece on will.i.am feat. Critical Response to will.i.am feat. Mick Jagger & Jennifer Lopez T.H.E. The Hardest Ever

The song has received mixed reviews from music critics. Simon Vozick-Levinson wrote a mixed review for Rolling Stone, stating that on the single will.i.am “strews dodgy rhymes (“I woke up in the morning/Hard like morning wood in the morning”) over diamond-bright synths, while J. Lo handles the efficient hook. It all feels a bit perfunctory – except for Mick’s guest verse, a kitschy delight delivered in a “Midnight Rambler” snarl.

The website “DJ Booth” also gave to the song a mixed review, writing that “this tough-as-nails cut finds Will, “Audiobot” and Dallas Austin teaming up to craft a danceable synth-percussion beat to back the B.E.P.mastermind as he delivers his trademark blend of Auto-Tuned singing and guilty-pleasure punchline lyricism. After a tuneful guest verse from J-Lo (who also lends her vocals to the chorus), the Rolling Stones frontman grabs the mic to flaunt his considerable swagger (and his poor math skills: “Hard like geometry, trigonometry / This is crazy—psychology”) in a gruff closing 16.”

Amy Sciarretto of “Pop Crush” wrote that “This is not a pretty dance song. It’s harsh, rough around the edges and, well, hard.” Billboard‘s Chris Payne wrote that ” The concept sounds crazy, but Will.i.am is the perfect studio whiz to oversee the commotion. The master of ceremonies adds to the fun by referencing “Back to the Future” to the Wu-Tang Clan to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in his opening verse.

It’s great to see some performers in the music business are still making music just for the fun of it and is real fun to listen and dance like LMFAO Sexy And I Know It. Any professional DJ will smile at this. These guys are such a goof and have no problem making fun of themselves and everybody else along the way. In some ways, they remind me of the many of the early rock and roll bands in the late fifties and early sixties that songs were just for fun and didn’t serve much purpose except to have fun. LMFAO Sexy And I Know It also reminds me of the way The B-52’s enjoy making fun music.

Tom Tom Club Genius of Love was originally planned as a side project from Talking Heads musicians, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, a husband and wife team. It charted high on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Dance Charts. Tom Tom Club Genius of Love was huge in the clubs for both Dance and early Hip Hop clubs as a professional DJ. Tom Tom Club Genius of Love was one of those songs that was just fun to listen and dance. Previous to the release of their self-titled album and song Tom Tom Club Genius of Love, it was not clear to many how much creative input other Talking Heads members had besides David Byrne.

This wedding season twice, I have had a request to play Red Hot Chili Peppers Hard To Concentrate at the Recessional at the end of the Ceremony as a Rhode Island Wedding DJ. I enjoyed seeing the couples strutting down the aisle with smiles from ear to ear to Red Hot Chili Peppers Hard To Concentrate. Red Hot Chili Peppers Hard To Concentrate is a great song with such a nice flow to it. Rumor has it Flea asked his wife to marry him to this song.

I had not heard this version previously, but once I heard it, I understood why she wanted it. It was perfect for a beach Ceremony with the lighthouse in the background. She looked fantastic and it was like a scene from a movie with Red Hot Chili Peppers Hard To Concentrate playing in the background as they left the beach with the sun beginning to set, as we watched them making their way up the hill. It occurred to me recently at a wedding that I have not added many slow songs to the list of music videos reviewed. This, Frank Sinatra The Way You Look Tonight, was the song I was playing when it hit me and figured that would be a great place to start. I know it is more fun and ‘sexier’ to only include the fast and hot songs but Frank Sinatra The Way You Look Tonight and many other great artists have recorded such a wealth of outstanding classic slow songs for the professional Wedding DJ.

More than any other artist, I grew-up listening to Frank Sinatra. I felt like he was a member of the family at times. His records were always on or close to the record player waiting to be played. Old Blue Eyes as he was called, would sing to us about love and life in the New Jersey/New York City region. I cannot count the number of times I heard my father and other friends and family members arguing over when they saw Sinatra and who he was with. His legendary connections, whether true or false, were part of the Sinatra lore. After all, he was a Jersey Boy from Hoboken.

 

He learned to sing by ear and never learned how to read music. At age eight he would illegally sing standing on the bar for tips to help his family pay their bills. His success peaked in the late 40’s and early 50’s. His acting career helped him to regain fame in the 60’s and was notorious for hanging with the Rat Pack, his friends Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop, which originally centered around Humphrey Bogart. Sinatra, Martin and Davis were the three ‘core members’. They all starred in the original film, Oceans Eleven.

After a successful career with Destiny’s Child Beyonce and Jay-Z Crazy In Love was the beginning of her solo recording career and hit the mark from the first beat.

His soft gentle voice contrasts so beautifully with the gritty nature of the lyrics, instrumentation and mindset of the song. The song initially recorded by Ed Bruce, written by him and wife Patsy Bruce.  Willie and Waylon’s version went #1 on The Hot Country Singles charts and won them a Grammy for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals.
