Fun. Some Nights, Fun.’s second major hit from their Some Nights album. It is both catchy, pop and self-reflective. How many Pop songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 reach #3 with this being part of the chorus?

The lyrics to Fun. Some Nights are very introspective and include a depth and thoughtfulness rarely heard in Pop Music. I am so glad to have come across Fun. Some Nights long before it became a hit. Similar to “We Are Young”, Fun. Some Nights spent several months on the Billboard Hot 100 before it finally climbed into the Top Ten.

Psy Gangnam Style

Recently, I was the professional Wedding DJ for a multicultural couple; the Bride’s family is from Korea and she has embraced her Korean and American roots and heritage. During the reception, I thought it would be fun to play a K-Pop song that was popular in Korea while I was there by a group called Jewel named, “Baby One More Time”. Of course, everyone got up to dance and a guy who is not Korean from Brooklyn ran over and asked if I had “That new song from Korea that is a hit in the clubs?”. It took a minute for us to figure out what song he was talking about and it was Psy Gangnam Style! I played it immediately following and it was a total hit! Everybody was having so much fun.

I used to live in South Korea and love the people and the culture. I was an English Teacher at a local elementary school filled with adorable, eager children.  Since I have returned to The States, I have kept my eyes open for anything that reminds me of my time in Korea, especially the food and people. Great dance music is very common and part of Korean Culture.

For those who don’t know what Psy Gangnam Style is about, Gangnam is a section of Seoul known for hipsters and folks who think classy is defined by what you show, your clothes and your car.  Psy had created Psy Gangnam Style as a satire to make fun of them and the lifestyle they exhibit. It is really funny if you know anything about Korean culture and the video is a total hoot. Enjoy!

Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros Home

A couple of weeks ago, I was MC & DJ for a Wedding in Westchester County, NY. The Bride and Groom had chosen Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros Home as a Bridal Party Dance Song after their First Dance. It was so much fun! Everybody of all ages ended up dancing, whistling and singing on the dance floor! It was one of the most fun experiences I’ve had as a professional Wedding DJ in quite a while. I will recommend this song for future events now that I know even folks that are not interested in this particular musical style will be able to join in and have fun.

How Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros Home Came To Be

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros is an American band led by Alex Ebert, who is also a vocalist of the power pop group Ima Robot. Their first show as a full band was played July 18, 2007 at The Troubadour in West Hollywood, California. Their first full-length recording, Up from Below, was released digitally on July 7, 2009 and physically on July 14, 2009 on Community Records. Their second full-length album, Here, was released on May 29, 2012.

Ebert began work on a book about a messianic figure named Edward Sharpe after breaking up with his girlfriend, joining a 12-step program for addiction, and moving into a house with his lifelong friend Nicholas Raymond Kellen. According to Ebert, Sharpe “was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind…but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love.” Ebert later met singer Jade Castrinos outside a downtown Los Angeles cafe.

David Guetta Featuring Sia Titanium

David Guetta Featuring Sia Titanium is a ballad written by Sia Furler, Guetta, Giorgio Tuinfort and Afrojack. The song features the strong vocals of Sia from Australia, the second song with an Australian singer in the Top Ten in the USA this year, along with Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know”!  For Sia, this is her second Top Ten American hit this year as well with “Wild Ones’ with Flo Rida.  David Guetta continues to pump out fun and forceful dance hits that top the charts across several genre; Pop, Dance and House.

David Guetta Featuring Sia Titanium is a ballad which draws from the genres of pop, house and urban–dance. The song’s lyrics are about inner strength. Sia’s vocals on David Guetta Featuring Sia Titanium received comparisons to those by Fergie and the song was also musically compared to Coldplay‘s work. Critics were positive towards the song and noted it as one of the standout tracks from Nothing but the Beat. “Titanium” attained top 10 positions in several major music markets, including Australia, Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States. In the United Kingdom, it peaked at number one, becoming Guetta’s fifth number-one single on the chart and Sia’s first. The song’s accompanying music video premiered on December 21, 2011 but does not feature appearances by Guetta and Sia. Instead, the video focuses on a young boy, played by actor Ryan Lee, with supernatural powers. DJ Non-Traditional Romance Mix (Lush Jams)

The second mix in the DJ Non-Traditional Romance Mix series. The Traditional Romance Mix (Lush Jams) includes songs that are a little too fast for Slow Jams but not really uptempo. They typically are lush and deep with textured sounds. These are not songs typically thought of or associated with romance, which is one of the reasons the DJ Non-Traditional Romance Mix (Lush Jams) was so much fun to create.

I enjoyed the opportunity to mix in some covers of classic tunes like  Madonna’s “Borderline”, Elton John’s “Sacrifice” and Ravel’s “Bolero”.  It is fun playing with such textured grooves and beats together to weave an eclectic and diverse musical landscape.

Fun. featuring Janelle Monae We Are Young

One of the marvels of the technological age in the music industry is the various ways a song can become a hit. Fun. featuring Janelle Monae We Are Young went from #48 to #3 on Billboard HOT 100 this week, it is the highest ranking yet for the group Fun..  Fun. featuring Janelle Monae We Are Young has been featured on TV shows “Chuck” and “Glee” and was still not a hit. It took a Chevy commercial during the Super Bowl with Fun. featuring Janelle Monae We Are Young for this song to receive the notoriety it deserves.

 

I also find it entertaining that folks insult each other over how they found out about the artist or song. To me, the source is not important. If you like a song or found it increased the enjoyment of a TV show, movie or commercial, good for you! Music has the magic of shifting anything into something special with the right song. This is the job of a good professional DJ. We take traditional occasions and turn them into a lasting memory and an event to talk about with excitement. Music can do that.

It is a treat to hear a New Year’s song that is not about drinking and partying exclusively like ABBA Happy New Year Song. For me, the passing of the years has been a period of reflection. I have found it interesting that ABBA has made a career of writing songs that have more to them than meets the ear at first listen with positive, cheerful tones. In some ways, similar to how Elton John and Bernie Taupin blended often dark or reflective lyrics to melodies acceptable for popular airplay and sales.

ABBA was a Swedish pop group formed in Stockholm in 1972, comprising Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Anderssonand Anni-Frid Lyngstad. ABBA is an acronym of the first letters of the band members’ first names and is sometimes stylized as the registered trademark ᗅᗺᗷᗅ. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of pop music, topping the charts worldwide from 1972 to 1982. They are also known for winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, giving Sweden its first victory in the history of the contest and being the most successful group ever to take part in the contest.

ABBA has sold over 370 million records worldwide and still sells millions of records a year, which makes them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. ABBA was the first pop group to come from a non-English-speaking country that enjoyed consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries, including the UK, Ireland, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Roy Orbison Pretty Woman

Roy Orbison was one of our great voices in pop music. He grew-up listening to and playing Rockabilly and Country and Western in Texas.  Between 1960-1964, Orbison had 22 singles place on Billboards Top 40. He was elected into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; Bruce Springsteen was his presenter. Roy Orbison Pretty Woman reached #1 on Billboard and stayed there for three weeks.

Roy made a comeback when teaming up with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne to form the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys. He died of a heart attack soon after that. His first wife and two of his sons died of separate accidents.

Five years after its release, in 1969, the single was awarded gold record by RIAA. Orbison posthumously won the 1991Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for his live recording of the song on his HBO television special Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night. In 1999, the song was honored with a Grammy Hall of Fame Award and was named one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame‘s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it #222 on their list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”
