Great Night at Hoboken International Film Festival

Last Thursday Night was my fourth year as festival DJ for the Hoboken International Film Festival. It was a very fun night supporting an outstanding film festival. As usual, the Hoboken International Film Festival Awards Gala was filled with celebrities, which always adds to the excitement.

Along with playing a hard-driving set of 80’s Rock Music beforehand, the Hoboken International Film Festival music of choice, I played the music that each presenter and award recipient walked to and from the stage. This year, although present, Robert Loggia did not present any awards, so, the Frank Sinatra I usually play for him was left out of the night’s entertainment. His film roles include An Officer and a GentlemanMercy Mission: The Rescue of Flight 771, based on the Air New Zealand Flight 103 incident, ScarfacePrizzi’s HonorOver The TopIndependence DayNecessary RoughnessReturn to MeArmed and Dangerous, and Big (for which he won a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor).

Great Night at Hoboken International Film Festival

Kenneth Del Vecchio, Founder and Chairman of Hoboken International Film Festival  entered the stage to Rush “Limellight”, which was his personal choice. The Hoboken International Film Festival Host, Gilbert Gottfried was brought to the stage by several songs, the first was Joe Walsh “Life’s Been Good”. Joyce DeWitt ran up to present awards with The Beatles “Magical Mystery Tour” echoing through the beautiful, historic Paramount Theatre. She is such an amazing woman and still rocks the stage like few others. Nina Transfeld, a friend and talented, beautiful woman, bounced up to the stage with her lively presence to Queen, “Now I’m Here”. I recalled how much Nina enjoys Queen from festivals past.

Jeff Davis, lead Producer of the Film and Broadway hit, “Rock of Ages”, entered the stage to Offspring “Self-esteem” smiling from ear-to-ear. Always feels good to get a man who makes shows and films about Rock Music to appreciate your music.  Film Editor Ron Kalish was beaming as Joe Jackson “I’m The Man” filled the theatre. Rachael Robbins, Playboy model, stand-up comedian and actress, lit-up the stage with her strut to Lenny Kravitz version of “American Woman”. She is so much fun and enjoys the spotlight more than most. Michael Rivera, who does not have the same fondness of 80’s Rock Music as the rest of the team, was pumped-up when Run-DMC “Rock Box” was his selection. Robert Bogue, best known as A.C. Mallet on The Guiding Light for 338 episodes, was playing the air guitar to Heart “Barracuda” across the stage, it was hilarious!

As the night was closing, Kenneth Del Vecchio was called back to the stage to present the award for Best Narrative Film to his favorite song, another one from years past, Peter Gabriel “Solsbury Hill”. As the theater began to empty to Uncle Kracker “Follow Me”, Joyce DeWitt came to the DJ station with arms wide open offering a hug and these words to complete an amazing night, “Wow! That was the best music at any event I have ever been at! Thank you so much for making this such a great night!”. Trust me, I am one the needing to thank you Joyce for all the laughs and fun you gave me growing-up watching Three’s Company!

Amazing Night at The Hoboken International Film Festival

Each time I have had the opportunity to DJ and priovide music for The Hoboken International Film Festival, I leave feeling inspired and grateful. Last night was even more so than past years with the Hoboken International Film Festival.

Hoboken International Film Festival with DJ Mystical Michael

Sometimes it takes a professional DJ more than one experience to figure out what works at such a special event. I think I nailed it last night! The festival founder and President, Kenneth Del Vecchio, appreciates 80’s Rock as the genre for the event. Rock, even 80’s Rock, is a rather large genre and needs some communication and understanding to get exactly what that means to each individual. To one person, 80’s Rock can mean Michael Jackson, to another it could be Journey, the next it might be Peter Gabriel or AC/DC. And we still have not covered the whole genre. Even though 80’s Rock was the genre we were featuring, I still made certain to include Rock Music from other periods, Motown, Soul and few others sprinkled in. One of the presenters, actor Mike Rivera, when he arrived at the podium, stated he liked the song being played, Ram Jam “Black Betty” but where is the Kanye? Three songs later Kanye West made it to the Hoboken International Film Festival too.

Paul Sorvino at Hoboken International Film Festival with DJ Mystical Michael

Last night the great actor Paul Sorvino received The Lifetime Achievement Award. It was an honor to be in his presence and play a song for him, which he danced and sang to without us planning on him doing so. Apparently, he appreciates Bobby Darin’s “Beyond The Sea” as much as I do! At events like the Hoboken International Film Festival, it is a fun challenge to guess what songs will match with what actor, celebrity or politician without communication from them. It is even more fun when I guess right like I did with Mr. Sorvino.

An amazing night with fun, excitement, inspiration and great music. Can’t wait till next year’s Hoboken International Film Festival.

DJ Audience of Two: Robert Loggia and Audrey Loggia

Last Night at The Hoboken International Film Festival where I am the Festival DJ, I was getting ready for the crowd to enter the main theatre for the Opening Night Gala and movie release party and who crept in before anybody else? Robert Loggia and his charming wife Audrey!

Robert Loggia has starred in many classic films and received a list of awards. Here is a partial list of some of the more popular films he has appeared in: Scarface, An Office and A Gentleman, Big, Prizzi’s Honor, The Sopranos, Independence Day, The Pink Panther series and one of my favorite films ever, Wide Awake.

Robert Loggia was interviewwed by AC Club and I thought this piece was interesting:

“AVC: When you’re doing such an intense movie like Scarface, what did you guys do to blow off steam when you weren’t working?

Robert Loggia: I think most of us who stayed on the set went to our trailer. I would meditate a lot. I’m 81, so it’s more than 50 years of a way of working. I guess for each actor they have a different style.

AVC: How does the meditation help you?

Robert Loggia: It quiets you, and gives you energy. Doesn’t keep you revved up. So when they claw you back to the set, you’re fresh as a daisy, ready to go. I can’t be under the weight of the character for a 14-hour shooting day. I don’t think anybody can do that.”

Every year they enter the theatre before the rest of the crowd to get into their seats without all the chaos of a red carpet event. Last year we had some conversation and I found out they are Sinatra fans like me. So, when they found their seats, I asked if they wanted me to play some music for them before everybody else joins us.

He smiled and Audrey responded, “Sure. That would be great.”

“I remember from last year you both enjoy Frank Sinatra.”

“Wow! What a memory!”

“It’s my job. Besides, you two are special guests.”

I selected a couple of Sinatra tunes, “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and “Come Dance With Me”” and turned on the speakers of my BOSE L1 System and got the desired result, both Audrey and Robert loggia were smiling and slid back into their seats to relax and enjoy the music. Of course, our moment together was short before the theatre was packed with all the Actors, Writers, Directors and Producers.

It was an experience that this professional DJ will treasure for quite a while.

DJ Mystical Michael Returns To The Hoboken International Film Festival!

I am very grateful to be invited back to The Hoboken International Film Festival for the third year in a row! I love the festival and all the unique films they have highlighted. Last year I was able to view may of the films ands enjoyed most of them, especially the documentary of the fire at Seton Hall University.

The two events I will be volunteering music and DJ services for at The Hoboken International Film Festival are the two main attractions: The Filmmakers Reception & Opening Night Screenings on June 1, 2012 and The Gala Awards Ceremony on June 7, 2012. Both events attract a significant number of celebrities and local actors, as well as the foreign filmmakers and actors. The tow previous years I have had the opportunity to meet several celebrities but meeting Robert Loggia has been the most exciting for me so far.

I can’t lie; my brief meeting with Filmmaker and Actor Deidre Lorenz was also a highlight. She is a talented, intelligent, caring and gorgeous star on the rise!

A Night of Celebrities at Hoboken Film Festival with DJ Mystical Michael

Last Friday night I again was asked to provide music for The Hoboken International Film Festival. It was a good time with lots of good food, beverages, music, a premier movie and more celebrities than I can count.  There is something really fun about seeing Robert Loggia rockin’ out to your DJ jams while waiting for the film to begin, which he was in the cast – The Great Fight.  I did not notice till I was almost done with my set that Gilby Clarke formerly of Guns N Roses was present as well. So, I quickly cued-up Sweet Child O Mine as the introduction song for Festival Producer Kenneth Del Vecchio. It is good to be a professional DJ and MC in The New Jersey & New York Metro area. I get to be a part of so many great events!

I had produced the same event last year and saw many of the same folks that I had met the year before.  This year since there was a greater turn-out and more people drifted to the space that I was playing music, it was even more fun and another opportunity for me to share my skills as a professional DJ with others. I hope my schedule continues to allow me to offer my services to non-profit events and to support the arts as I try to do at least once or twice a month when possible.

Hoboken International Film Festival 2010 Professional DJ

It was an interesting experience getting the opportunity to work with all the producers, directors and talent at the festival. I met some great folks and played some rockin’ tunes. It was such a treat to see Robert Loggia win the Lifetime Achievement Award. He is such a great actor! One of my favorite pieces of his work was in the movie Wide Awake where he played Grandpa Beal, an M. Night Shyamalan film. Of course, how can we forget his performance in Big with Tom Hanks!

My favorite part of the Festival was definitely the Awards Gala. Getting to do the sound and music for each award was tricky and kept me on my toes throughout the whole night. I have a new respect for awards shows now. Deidre Lorenz received the audience appreciation Award for Santorini Blue. Check it out when it goes international! She is an amazing talent.

I can’t wait till next year for this great event!
