Tomorrow I get the opportunity as Multicultural Wedding DJ for an Indian Bride and a French Canadian Groom. This will be the first time I am Multicultural Wedding DJ for this specific Bride and and Groom pairing. As a Rhode Island Multicultural Wedding DJ, I often to get create extraordinary Weddings for all kinds of Brides and Grooms. I relish the chance to participate in such an important event. We have had fun collaborating on creating their playlist and amazing Wedding night together. They live in Montreal, Canada and the wedding is being held at The Mirage in Edison, New Jersey. Edison, New Jersey has a very vibrant community of Indian-Americans and probably the best and most authentic Indian cuisine in New Jersey.
The Mirage is beautiful and excellent venue to hold a Wedding or Party if you want authentic Indian Cuisine and atmosphere.
From The Mirage website:
“A grand porch, long enough to park the longest limo, welcomes you gracefully. Onyx and granite waterfalls great your guests and amber crystals light the way. It is no illusion. This is the elegant and beautiful MIRAGE.”
One of the fun and interesting aspects of preparing for this wedding as the Multicultural Wedding DJ, has been the new music that I have been turned-on to by the Bride and Groom. They have very diverse and eclectic taste in music like I do. The Bride and Groom have selected many french songs from Canada, France, Mali and other French-speaking regions of Africa. The Wedding Ceremony will be a traditional Hindi Wedding. The Cocktail Hour will be predominantly Jazz Vocalists like Nat King Cole, Edith Piaf, Louis Armstrong and Astrud Gilberto, among others. The Reception will feature music from India, Canada, Africa, Europe, Asia and of course, The United States.
Should be a fun night as a Rhode Island Multicultural Wedding DJ!
Generally, when I focus a spotlight on an artist, they are someone that has had a successful musical career over several decades but Jay-Z is a unique talent and deserves special attention. Born Shawn Corey Carter, Jay-Z is one of the most popular Rappers in the world. He has brilliantly expanded his financial interests into fashion, record producing, sports, real estate and sports bars. He was raised in the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn, NY and struggled in school and with the law. His father left him and his siblings, and in 1982, he shot his brother in the shoulder for stealing his jewelry. His mother has spoken about Sean banging beats on the kitchen table as a kid late night and keeping his brothers awake.
Jay-Z has been known for his support of President Barack Obama, global water shortages, same sex marriage, Hurricane Katrina and young voter turn-out. He has been criticized along with his wife Beyonce Knowles, for not being more politically active at times, most notably by Harry Belefonte who said they, “have turned their back on social responsibility”.
Jay-Z has collected fourteen Grammy Awards, he holds the record for most number one albums by a solo artist on the Billboard Top 200 with eleven, four number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and has sold over 50 million albums worldwide. Many consider him one, if the not the greatest Rapper of all time. He is a favorite by any professional DJ who specializes with music from R&B, Hip Hop, Rap and Pop.
“Shawn Corey Knowles-Carter(né Carter; born December 4, 1969),[2] better known by his stage name Jay-Z, is an American rapper, record producer, entrepreneur, and occasional actor. He is one of the most financially successful hip-hop artists and entrepreneurs in America. In 2012, Forbes estimated Carter’s net worth at nearly $500 million.” Wikipedia

I did not know when I first started promoting DJ Mystical Michael here in the New Jersey, New York and Philly area that I would have so much fun working with Multicultural Brides and Grooms at their Weddings. It is not that I am not aware of what a great mix of cultures we have in New Jersey and New York, I grew-up here and have never experienced the world through the eyes of just one way or culture. It would seem obvious that a local man who is from a Multicultural family would attract Multicultural Brides and Grooms to perform as DJ at their Weddings right? Well, it was not obvious for me at the time but I embrace the amazing opportunities that have come my way to work with Multicultural Brides and Grooms, especially the past few months.
It is so much fun for me to support Multicultural Brides and Grooms blend their family styles, traditions and music into one big, simple and elegant Wedding! I remember several years ago when I was a Social Work student and had taken a class titled, “Racial and Ethnic Groups”. The Professor would remind us on a regular basis, “You don’t know what you don’t know and how can you?” This is the attitude I try to bring to my interactions with all my clients, especially Multicultural Brides and Grooms; you know your family, friends and what you want, I am here to make sure that it works exceptionally well.
Last night I met with a really fun and nice Multicultural Brides and Groom that are Italian and Latina. We had so much fun laughing and sharing ideas about their Wedding. I am baffled why so many professional Wedding DJs hate this aspect of their work. For me, I love to get to know my Brides, Grooms and Party Planners before we agree to work together when possible. I like the connection and hearing your stories and experiences that have brought you together today. How can you do an an exceptional job at your Wedding or Party unless you know who they are and what they want, especially Multicultural Brides and Grooms?
I am grateful to live and work in the New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania region where we have such diversity of culture, ideas and traditions. It is hard for me to imagine being a professional Wedding DJ, Event DJ and Party DJ in a location that is not as diverse. Besides, you get the best food at Multicultural Weddings!
It is very common for couples preparing for their wedding day to be nervous about The First Dance. Not all of us have the potential to be dancers for Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, present company included. For those who are a bit more self-conscious than most folks, it can be down-right stressful, especially if you are not a dancer.
I met with a nice young couple last week to help prepare their wedding DJ music and coordination. It turns out they are both Rockers who do not dance, nor enjoy it. They shared that they are trying to cram a last minute dance class before their September wedding. As someone who dances a lot but is not ‘skilled’ or ‘art in motion’, I smiled at their ambition. One or two classes may not get them much improvement, but it might offer them some confidence, which may be more essential.
It has been my experience there are only a few couples of their First Dance that leave a lasting impression beyond the moment itself. The joy and celebration of the dance sticks with most of us. Here are a few examples of First Dances.
1) The REAL dancers! The couples that either one or both are trained dancers with plenty of experience whether it be in the studio or the club. They will be remembered for their dancing as well as the experience. I think they are an overwhelming minority of Weddings I have been professional DJ.
2) The Goofballs! Every now and then I get the opportunity to provide music for a couple who can’t dance and are just out on the dance floor having a blast playing around and being goofy. This takes a large chunk of courage but is a fun experience for everyone and seems to speak loudest of the love and trust they have in each other. I am starting to see this couple as a Wedding DJ more and more and enjoy being present for the expression of creativity and playfulness.
3) The Awful dancers who are OK with it. We can all see that this is not what they do best and appreciate their willingness to give a genuine attempt, knowing in advance they will not succeed and are embracing it fully. I sense that most of us hold this couple dearest to our hearts. Who can’t feel inspired by a couple who are willing to put themselves out there fully without any track record to fall back on? The nervous steps and Wedding Dress caught under the feet while she blushes and giggles is a moment we capture in our mental image long after the wedding or dance. It is a statement about love and faith in each other, themselves and their friends and family.
Hint #1: If you do not qualify for #1, people are less interested in your skills as dancers and just enjoying being with you during the dance. We are celebrating the moment with you and rarely notice how well you do or do not dance with the exception of the couples who actually choreograph their First Dance with skill and precision, who are the vast minority.
Hint #2: Have fun! Enjoy your time and attention on the dance floor. It’s yours and no one can take it from you.
As someone who comes form the Shaquile O’Neal-Free Throw-School-Of-Dance, meaning, just because I do it a lot does not mean I am any good at it; I invite you to have fun and enjoy your partner, family and friends. The steps themselves are not the focus, it is the symbol and tradition that typically hold most significance.I know, I am a professional Wedding DJ.
Obviousoly not a First Dance or wedding photo. I did not experience this dance in person. I am blown away by this image every time I see it. Hope you are too!
One of the joys of living and performing in the NYC/NJ/Philly Region is the opportunity to work as a professional DJ with Multicultural Weddings. I received a request for a quote from a young lady whose sister is getting married in November. It is a small wedding at View Of The Hudson in Piermont, NY. She has the honor of both being her sister and Maid of Honor and is required to find and secure a professional DJ for her sister’s wedding. We exchanged several emails before having a fun and informative conversation via the phone.
It turns out she is from a Filipino family and her sister’s fiancé is Italian. My Mom’s family is Italian and I grew up eating mostly Italian food from an excellent cook that has spoiled me for life.
I love to DJ Multi-Cultural Weddings. They are so much fun and always have a few interesting twists to add spice and variety to any event. This one should be no exception. I too am from a Multi-Cultural family and it provided some unique and peculiar traditions when both sides of the family gathered together. I know many professional DJs flinch when presented with cultures they are not originally from; I do not understand this. I look forward to these events and the new experiences they offer. In the past year I have performed at about ten weddings with Brides and Grooms of different races, cultures or continents. I learn something new at every one of them and meet great people. Glad I am here in New Jersey where this kind of wedding is commonplace.
