Last Friday Night, I was professional DJ at a fun 60th Birthday Party. It was a surprise party put together by her husband and best friend. They did a great job of keeping it hidden and she looked totally shocked when she walked into The Tap Room at the Somerset Hills Hotel in Warren, New Jersey.

DJ Music Played From All Six Generations of Her Life

They had the neat idea of wanting DJ music played throughout the night for all six generations of her life. This started with Louis Armstrong and Dean Martin, Bobby Darin and Dion, Motown and The Beatles, Barry White and Neil Diamond, Michael Jackson and Bee Gees, Aerosmith and Salt-N-Pepa and lots of current songs as well with Carly Rae Jepsen, Jason Mraz, Taio Cruz, Black Eyed Peas, LMFAO and Maroon 5. It was a fun DJ night that I am sure all will talk about for years to come.

Professional DJ 60th Birthday Party!

Tonight I get to provide music, DJ & MC services for a 60th birthday party! The best part is that it is a surprise birthday party that the husband and her best friend have done an excellent job of keeping a secret. I enjoy being the professional DJ at milestone birthday parties, they are fun, exciting and have such a nice celebratory feeling without the concerns of some larger events. It is always fun participating in surprise parties with everyone running around making sure it is all perfect before the guest of honor arrives. Then they all hide and try to be quiet. Of course, there is always one person who can’t keep still or quit no matter how hard they try, they just add to the entertainment. Finally, there is the last minute cue to let somebody know they are almost arriving and a complete hush hits the room. All but the one guy who can’t keep quiet and there is also some guy who takes the ‘opportunity’ to tickle a woman knowing she can’t laugh or giggle out loud. He too adds to the moment in a gross and backwards kind of way.

Preparing For A Surprise Birthday Party

When the guest of honor arrives and everybody pops out of what seems like every nook and cranny possible, the real fun begins. These parties do not need the usual getting comfortable period that some parties do. They don’t even need for folks to be full of alcohol for the partying to begin, just turn up the music and let the fun hit the roof!

I have enjoyed my experiences with helping to plan and coordinate this birthday party with the husband and her best friend. He was a little concerned, as we should be these days, that everything would go as planned since he found me on the internet. I mentioned to him that I have a guarantee stating if you are not happy with my performance at your event, do not pay me the balance. He laughed like most people do when I tell this to them and replied, “Of course, I will pay you, I just want to be sure you will actually show-up and do a great job”. I again stated that I offer this to every customer and mean it, if you do not like what you receive from me, don’t pay the balance due. Why should you not have a method for holding me accountable for quality level of service, since you can’t really ask for a refund for services already provided? A guarantee is the only fair thing to give you peace of mind that your event or wedding will be fantastic.

I can’t wait to see her face when all the fun begins tonight!

I often do not post videos of Top 40 songs while they are popular. They typically get enough promotion on their own. Katy Perry Firework is somehow different than the bulk of pop songs by teen stars. Katy Perry does seem to try things that are a bit off the beaten path and this is no exception.

 

The video and lyrics of Katy Perry Firework go beyond what is often flooding the pop charts. I wish more artists were willing to incorporate messages in their music and videos that speak to the challenges that many young people experience. Today more than ever pop stars influence their youthful listeners and the messages they provide are rarely supportive to healthy development.

13 Gigs In 16 Days For DJ Mystical Michael

It occurred to me the other day that I am about to begin a rather intense run as professional Disc Jockey over the next two weeks. I am booked for thirteen gigs over the next two weeks starting tonight! This is very exciting for me and grateful I have the opportunity to share my art as professional DJ with others. There are several Weddings, Trivia Shows and a Festival all mixed together.

Of course, the Weddings always hold top billing due to the nature of the event and the importance to the Bride, Groom, family and friends. I think all of us professional Wedding DJs give our undivided attention to each Wedding, Bride and Groom, at least I know most good professional Wedding DJs do. Wedding DJs also get the opportunity to be involved in the planning and coordinating process with the Bride and Groom, which I thoroughly enjoy.

This should be a fun and interesting two weeks for this professional Disc Jockey. The DJ gigs are all over New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania including The Poconos, Upstate New York, rural Central New Jersey, New Rochelle, Morristown, Hackettstown, Phillipsburg and Newton to name some stops during the 13 Gigs In 16 Days For DJ Mystical Michael.

What Makes A Great Birthday Party DJ?

Great Music. Great People.  Great Vibe.  And a great Birthday Party DJ.

I get often asked, “DJ Michael, how do I make sure that the Birthday Party I am throwing will be totally fun?”

 

“Simple. You need three main ingredients sprinkled throughout your party, Great Music, Great People and a Great Vibe. The rest all falls into place.”

 

“That’s it?  What about the food, venue and theme? Don’t they matter too?”

 

“Of course. Everything matters for an exceptional party. If you have the main ingredients of Great Music, People and Vibe, you will have a great party. The other components will add to the party but it will be great without them. You can just put sixty fun people in a room with great music and an excellent DJ and they will have a great time. The right Birthday Party DJ can create the vibe for you. That’s our job. People think the DJ’s skills are about mixing and scratching. Anyone who practices for a few hours can do this.  The true NJ & NY Birthday Party DJ talents lie in our ability to create a fun vibe that makes everyone wants to enjoy themselves regardless of whether it is in a fancy place with expensive caterers and party favors or not.

Don’t get me wrong, the other components add flavor to the event and I am a total food connoisseur and love to eat good food but I can do that at home or at a restaurant and can buy myself party hats. What I want when I am a party is fun and a great atmosphere. This is what you pay your NJ or NY professional Birthday Party DJ to do for you.”

“I guess I never thought about it but makes sense.  Why does everyone focus so much attention and energy on the other details and not the professional DJ?”

“Before we all started hiring professional Rhode Island DJs for our parties and events, we needed all the other stuff to create atmosphere otherwise it didn’t feel like a party.  It is also easier to find good food than a good NJ or NY DJ and certainly much easier to know in advance which ones to choose. You can taste the food at a restaurant, venue or caterer but showing you a video or photos of our events doesn’t really let you know we will make your party great.”

“Exactly! So what do we do?”

 

“Get references! Ask your professional DJ before you sign your contract for references.  Also view their reviews and see if they have the right ‘feel’ for your party. I am not the best DJ for every event, even though I have plenty of high quality experiences at all events. If a client contacts me about an event that I do not think I will perform well at, I will coordinate one of the professional DJs I sub-contract with to make sure they get what they need. That’s how we build trust with our clients. I said no to a client who wanted to hire me just this week. I wasn’t the right professional DJ for her party and gave her a referral to a Rhode Island DJ I knew would be perfect.”
