Wedding Confidential: Industry Secrets

A professional Wedding DJ associate sent me an email about how outraged she was that ABC’s “20/20” did an expose called “Wedding Confidential: Industry Secrets” with Elizabeth Vargas. As what many of the high end professional Rhode Island Wedding DJ company call a ‘Lone Wolf’, meaning I run a one-person company myself, I immediately felt a wave of panic go through my body. I am a small Rhode Island Wedding DJ that makes my full-time income from my business and feared the expose may shed a bad light on the wedding industry. This might in turn effect my personal income. Like everybody else who loves their work, I too need to earn a living.

I watched the video of the expose tonight and was surprised that wedding industry professionals are offended by what was presented, most of it is true! There are may great wedding professionals who really care about the Brides and Grooms we work with, but I am sorry to say, we are the minority. They often speak about how easy it is to manipulate a young Brides vulnerability and wedding fantasy to making more money off her. Not all of the wedding industry works this way but there are enough of them for it to have merit. Please be careful when spending yours or your parents life savings away on your wedding. Check with your gut to see if this feels right for you. Your gut won’t lie, your fantasy of the dream wedding night may.

Bride and Groom Celebrate Wedding with Friends and Family with Rhode Island DJ

If you don’t feel right about a certain wedding vendor, follow your instincts and choose somebody else to work with.

The truth is that one of the aspects that Elizabeth Vargas touched on, needs further exploration. She seemed disturbed that event industry professionals like Wedding DJs, photographers, florists and videographers charge ore for wedding than for other events. Well, DUH! The amount of work that goes into a wedding compared to a birthday party, sweet sixteen, anniversary or graduation party are immense differences. I typically invest anywhere from three to ten hours preparation for wedding. A wedding involves meeting with the Bride and Groom, many email exchanges and phone calls, creating a playlist, coordinating Bridal Party Introductions, First Dance, Father-Daughter Dance, Mother-Son Dance,  Cake Cutting, Toasts, Blessings and oh yeah, producing great music and energy for friends and family to dance all night and have tons of fun! That is not even including probably the most important aspect, supporting and helping dissipate the Bride and Groom’s stress and concerns. A good Wedding DJ knows how to calm and guide a Bride and Groom towards their wedding, while making sure everything is planned to a “T”. As I say to my Brides and Grooms all the time, “We do not get a redo of your wedding. If we screw it up, we don’t get to do it again and provide a make-good”.

A Simple Mistake Like Pronouncing a Name Wrong Can Put a Damper on Your Wedding

I love being a Wedding DJ. That does not mean there is not a lot of effort and focus involved with making your day just as you want it. A party that is not a wedding, typically requires just a few hours of prep and minimal, if not no stress and intensity the night of the party. Weddings take a total commitment. An exceptional Wedding DJ cannot just show-up, we need to be totally prepared for whatever twists and turns your wedding may produce; rain, power failures, plane delays, ill family members, birth of babies and who knows what else may transpire? The exceptional Wedding DJ needs to be the one that pulls it all together when the rain comes out of nowhere at an outdoor wedding. The exceptional Wedding DJ needs to have a back-up portable PA that operates off battery if the power fails suddenly. We must be ready with extra cables and microphones if the Bride and Groom forgot to tell me that they are having a family member sing songs on my DJ equipment during dinner.

I hide nothing and want you to know how much more I will dedicate to your wedding compared to a birthday party.

I have no problem charging more money for weddings compared to other parties. In fact, I list the rates of mypackages both on the same page for all to see. I hide nothing and want you to know how much more I will dedicate to your wedding compared to a birthday party. It should be that way.

I invite you to watch the video of “Wedding Confidential: Industry Secrets” below. Let me know what you think!

Weddings, Weddings, Weddings!

It may appear obvious to most folks, but I am caught off-guard by the shear volume of contacts I receive from Brides and Grooms about their Weddings every winter at this time. I love it! There is something so exciting for me to answer a phone call or email from a Bride or Groom wanting information and guidance for their future Wedding. I feel totally of use as a professional Wedding DJ. My experience, knowledge and expertise are on full display and each Bride and Groom can feel the energy I create from the initial contact. I think that is one of the reasons I get hired for so many Rhode Island Weddings. Authenticity is a treasured commodity for planning a Rhode Island Wedding for a Bride or Groom. The Wedding industry is filled with ‘salespeople’ and ‘marketing pros’ that are smooth as silk in their presentation.

Fun Groom Partying with Rhode Island Wedding DJ

I think many Brides and Grooms today are looking for Wedding Professionals that are more authentic and offer simple and elegant Weddings for a fair price for the Bride and Groom and the Wedding Professional. It is my experience that you really do want to pay your Wedding DJ or Wedding Photographer what we are worth. As long as you are not being taken advantage of along the way. These days Brides get a bad rap in the media about being cheap and price-shoppers, without an eye for quality and taste. My Brides and Grooms are real people that want outstanding service and a very personal touch without acting like we are your brothers or sister; just an authentic professional co-creating an exceptional and unique Wedding with you. You want an experienced Wedding DJ that is fun, professional and authentic.

Wedding Industry Con Artists

There is a video clip floating around the Internet about an ‘expose’ on Wedding Vendors conning Brides and Grooms. I saw a small clip of it and it broke my heart that this happens. Even if it is exaggerated grossly, the fact that this happens at all repulses me. How can somebody in clear conscious steal from a Bride and Groom trying to begin the next chapter of their life together? I will write more on this later in the week.

New MacBook For Rhode Island DJ

I hate to admit it but I am a bit of a techno geek. I am not sure why it bothers me so much to accept this but I resist it like my life depended on it. Few things get me as excited as opening a box of some new gadget or piece of electronic equipment. As a Rhode Island DJ and Boston DJ, it is not OK to have mediocre equipment. It was time to upgrade to a faster and more powerful Mac. I will still use the same djay Software that I love. Of course, my BOSE L1 System with Bass I adore and will not switch till they come out with something better.

BOSE L1 with Bass for Rhode Island DJ

BOSE L1® Model 1S system with B1 Bass for Rhode Island DJ

  • Recommended for audiences up to 400
  • 12-speaker articulated line array delivers 180-degree horizontal sound coverage
  • Produces consistent tonal balance with less volume drop-off over distance
  • System’s interconnecting pieces allow for easy transport, setup and breakdown
  • B1 bass module included

Spend less time setting up your gear and more time enjoying it. The new L1 Model 1S portable line array system delivers a potent combination of portability and performance. It’s compact and light enough to make setup quick and easy, yet powerful enough to fill a mid-sized venue. This system works well for solo musicians, bands and public speakers. Includes one B1 bass module for enhanced low-end performance.

Put your PA behind you

The vertical configuration of the system’s small, closely spaced drivers allows the L1 Model 1S system to project sound forward and to the sides—delivering 180-degree coverage—but very little up and down, reducing unwanted reverberation. This produces consistent tonal balance as sound spreads more evenly across the stage and into the audience, and the volume level drops off much more slowly than with a conventional speaker.

Unique Bose® technologies enable the system to serve as both PA and monitor. It can be positioned behind or to the side of the performer—and you hear just what the audience hears. You’re in control, and there’s no need for conventional monitors, mixers and PA systems.

Convenience to go

The three components of the L1 Model 1S system—upper array, lower extension and power stand—connect quickly and easily without the need for separate speaker stands. Setup and breakdown take just minutes. And everything stores neatly into the included carry bags, making transport easy, too.

Deep bass from small enclosures

The B1 bass module is our more portable bass option. It is considerably lighter and smaller than conventional bass bins required for the same performance. And it ensures more accurate amplification of lower notes for most voices and instruments.
With the L1 Model 1S system you can add a second B1 module or power one B2 bass module for more flexibility and even greater power.

Multichannel flexibility

The optional T1 ToneMatch audio engine adds four more channels, so you can expand the system and connect additional instruments and microphones. You can also use the ToneMatch engine to fine-tune your sound with powerful, proprietary tone-shaping tools.

Spacial Dispersion and Articulated Array speaker technologies, available only from Bose for Rhode Island DJ

Spatial Dispersion™ and Articulated Array® speaker technologies in the loudspeaker produce wide, uniform sound coverage. The 12 small drivers are arranged using Articulated Array speaker technology in a slim, vertical enclosure—creating nearly 180 degrees of horizontal coverage and consistent tonal balance.

Built-in power amps to drive the loudspeaker and up to two B1 or one B2 bass modules for Rhode Island DJ

Integrated power amplifiers in the power stand provide clean, precise amplification for L1 Model 1S system with up to two B1 bass modules or one B2 bass module.
