Rhode Island DJ Music Chart – Week of 10/21

This weeks DJ Music Chart has a new number one with Lorde “Royals”! The rest of the top five is the same with a bit of musical chairs in placement; Katy Perry “Roar”, Avicii “Wake Me Up” and Miley Cyrus “Wrecking Ball”. Drake, Paramore, Talyor Swift and Britney Spears are all climbing quickly, so look for them to move into the top five of the DJ Music Chart in the upcoming weeks.

DJ Music Chart Review of Lorde Royals

Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor (born 7 November 1996), known by her stage name Lorde (/ˈlɔrd/), is a New Zealandsinger-songwriter. Her first EPThe Love Club, was released on 22 November 2012, and her first single, “Royals“, debuted at number one on the New Zealand Top 40, and also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2013, making her the first New Zealand solo artist to have a number one song in the United States. Her debut album, Pure Heroine, was released on 27 September 2013. She won the Silver Scroll Award for 2013 for “Royals”.

Lorde’s music draws from electropop, but she grew up listening to soul musicians Etta James and Otis Redding. She cites the unusual vocals of Grimes, the band Sleigh Bells and producer SBTRKT as prominent influences for Lorde.[34][35] Lorde also stated that she was inspired by the initially hidden identities of Burial and The Weeknd, explaining, “I feel like mystery is more interesting”, and called American musical artist Nicki Minaj an “important female in pop”. Lorde describes short story writers Raymond CarverWells TowerTobias Wolff and Claire Vaye Watkins as lyrical inspirations, and particularly noted their sentence structures.

During the writing of The Love Club (2013), Lorde was particularly influenced by Kanye West and she performed a cover version of West’s song “Hold My Liquor” at her Auckland concert on 7 September 2013.

Royals” is the debut song by New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde from her The Love Club EP (2012) and debut album, Pure Heroine (2013). The song was released on 8 March 2013, as the lead single from the album, after she was spotted at the age of 12 by A&R scout Scott Maclachlan, who signed her to Universal records. Lorde and Joel Little co-wrote and produced the song. Musically, “Royals” is a minimal and art pop song. Lyrically, it expresses the protagonist’s disdain for celebrities’ lavish lifestyles and contains a vow that she will not become one of them.

Upon release “Royals” was met with acclaim, winning the prestigious Silver Scroll Award for 2013, New Zealand’s top songwriting prize. Critics compared the song to that of British singer Adele‘s music and called the song “one of the best releases of the year.” “Royals” peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also peaked at number one in Ireland, Canada and New Zealand and was certified triple platinum by Recorded Music NZ. In August 2013, Lorde became the first female solo act to top the Billboard Alternative Songs chart since Tracy Bonham in 1996. “Royals” was the second time a New Zealander had topped the Billboard Hot 100, behind Kimbra‘s collaboration with Australian singer Gotye on “Somebody That I Used To Know” and the first time a New Zealand solo artist had reached number one

Joel Kefali directed the song’s music video, which portrays normal teenagers doing mundane things in slow motion. An international version of the video was released which features small appearances of Lorde. “Royals” has been remixed by artists including The Weeknd and Gilbere Forte. Wikipedia

Wedding Disaster with Rhode Island Wedding DJ - Providence Wedding DJ

by JEFF KEAR on JULY 27, 2011

New Wedding DJ Averts Major Wedding Disaster

It was Michael Swerdloff’s first wedding as a DJ. He was nervous but felt he had prepared sufficiently for his first wedding … or so he thought.

“The groom was the older brother of my DJ partner, and the bride was a good friend who previously dated the younger brother,” remembered Swerdloff, now the owner of DJ Mystical Michael. “I knew the bride, whose parents were divorced, and knew that she spelled and pronounced her last name in a Polish cultural accent.”

According to Swerdloff, the wedding went smoothly and the reception was a large one, with around 450 people all dressed to the nines. “I had never performed to such a large crowd, and I was given the list of names for the bridal party introductions about 10 minutes before I needed to announce them,” said Swerdloff.

After announcing the first groomsman and bridesmaid, a very large man in a three-piece, dark pinstriped suit approached his DJ booth and placed his hand over the microphone. Then, he slid back his jacket with his other hand to reveal a holstered .357 handgun. “He stared straight into my eyes with his scarred face and said, ‘Mr. _____ does not like his name mispronounced. If you do it again, it will be the last time you turn on a microphone. His name is pronounced _____,’” recalled Swerdloff.

As the man departed, the room fell silent as 450 people stared at the horrified DJ. “I gathered myself as much as possible and meekly introduced the rest of the bridal party using this new Italian pronunciation of the bride’s last name,” said Swerdloff. “To say I we shaking would be a gross understatement, but I survived and it was a great party.”

Later on, Swerdloff discovered that the bride’s father was a local mob boss and that was why the mother-of-the-bride divorced him as well as spelled and pronounced their last name with a Polish accent.

And what lesson is to be learned here? “Make sure you practice the pronunciation of all wedding party members in advance of the wedding with the bride or groom and ten minutes before their entrance,” replied Swerdloff. “It’s been 30 years since that happened, and I have not made the same mistake since.”

Rhode Island DJ Music Chart – Week of 10/7

This week’s DJ Music Chart continues with Katy Perry “Roar” as number 1 for the third straight week. Right behind Katy Perry is Avicii “Wake Me Up”.  Rounding out the top five are Lana Del Rey “Summertime Sadness”, Lorde “Royals” and Jay-Z “Holly Grail”.

This week we will review Avicii and “Wake Me Up”.

Wake Me Up” (stylized as “Wake Me Up!“) is a song by Swedish DJ and music producer Avicii, which features uncredited vocals from American soul singer Aloe Black and acoustic guitar from Incubus‘ Mike Einziger. It was released in June 2013 as the first single from Avicii’s full-length debut studio album, True, which was released on 17 September 2013.

The song achieved critical and commercial success internationally, peaking at number one in much of Europe and charting well in all of the English-speaking world. The song has been described as a “summer anthem” by Variance Magazine and, throughout the 2013 festival season, Avicii included it as part of the opening or closing sequence of his sets at EDC Las Vegas, EDC London, Tomorrowland, Creamfields, Electric Zoo and iTunes Festival.

DJ Music Chart Featuring Rhode Island Wedding DJ

In an interview with the Daily Star, Avicii, who had previously labelled “Wake Me Up!” as “a fun experiment” during an exclusive chat with MTV UK, said: “I had a demo with Mac Davis singing, the guy who wrote all the Elvis Presley stuff, but I needed another singer to do the parts. At the same time I was tipped off about doing another track with Aloe Blacc and I started working on that track. When I was with Mike Einziger from Incubus, we came up with the chord progression and the melody for Wake Me Up but no real lyrics. None of us sing and we really needed to get that demo down and the only person I knew that lived in LA was Aloe, so I called him and he was free. Lyrics come really easy to him so he wrote them in a couple of hours and we finished the track.”

Robert Copsey of Digital Spy blog gave the song a positive review, stating:

“As chart-friendly EDM continues to reach the furthest corners of the globe, staying ahead of the pack can prove a tricky task – especially when more and more acts arrive on the scene turning out mixes with identikit build-ups, tired lyrics and uninspired breakdowns that newcomers to the arena lap up with excitement. Kudos to Avicii then, who has dared to try something a little different for his latest offering. “So wake me up when it’s all over/ When I’m wiser and I’m older,” featured artist Aloe Blacc sings over dialled-up, country-flecked guitar strums that sound like Mumford & Sons on speed. The jig-along chorus may conjure up images of Brits-on-tour, but to be honest, what summer anthem doesn’t?” 4/5 stars

What Is A Rhode Island Multicultural DJ?

I get asked from time to time, “Michael, what is a Rhode Island Multicultural DJ?” And this is the conversation that typically follows.

I smile and reply, “A Rhode Island Multicultural DJ is a professional DJ that is well-versed in the many cultures and traditions that a diverse area like Rhode Island demands for great Weddings, parties and Events.”

Fun Dancing at Wedding with New Jersey Multicultural DJ

“Yeah, that sounds great but what does that mean in real life for me hiring a good Wedding DJ for me and my fiancé for our Wedding? We are from two different cultures and want our families and friends to have a great time and fit together well.”

That is exactly what a good Multicultural DJ does!

“A good Multicultural DJ has a vast library across many cultures and genres to meet the needs of a diverse population like yours. We are very comfortable with both taking direction and guidance from you as to what your cultural traditions and music demand, and taking over when you need someone to make sure everything goes exactly the way you wanted it. In short, a good Multicultural DJ is ready for whatever happens at your Wedding. That is what a good Rhode Island Multicultural DJ is. Make sense?”

Fun Dancing at Wedding with New Jersey Multicultural DJ

“Yes, I think I get it now. You are saying that a good Multicultural DJ knows a lot about different cultures and is confident enough to let their ego get in the way of me teaching the about my culture for my Wedding. Do I have it correct?”

“Yes, I should hire you to be my marketing guru!”

We both laugh and start talking about the details of their Rhode Island Multicultural Wedding and cultural traditions…

DJ Non-Traditional Romance Mix (Lush Jams)

The second mix in the DJ Non-Traditional Romance Mix series. The Traditional Romance Mix (Lush Jams) includes songs that are a little too fast for Slow Jams but not really uptempo. They typically are lush and deep with textured sounds. These are not songs typically thought of or associated with romance, which is one of the reasons the DJ Non-Traditional Romance Mix (Lush Jams) was so much fun to create.
