The Celtic, Reggae, Rockin’ Wedding DJ

It is not every day that a Wedding DJ gets to play Celtic, Reggae and Classic Rock at a wedding. In fact, I do not think I have ever had the opportunity before this weekend, to blend these genres in one fun wedding. The wedding was a young couple form Florida at The Bethwood in Totowa, NJ. The Bethwood has an excellent staff and the food is delicious. As with all weddings, it was the people and the Wedding DJ music that made the event special.

The couple and I worked together to form an excellent playlist to meet the needs of their eclectic tastes and to make sure their parents and family would have fun too. I think we did a decent job based on the comments and smiles. The Bridal Party Introduction Song they chose was from the Dropkick Murphys “I’m Shippin’ To Boston”. You may know this song from the film The Departed. They picked Bob Marley’s “Is This Love” as their First Dance Song. That set the tone for the afternoon and we never turned back.

It was fun mixing between Reggae, Rock and Celtic Music with some popular dance tunes along the way. What we didn’t expect as a pleasant surprise was the requests to dance to some Oldies like Ritchie Valens, Frankie Valli and a young woman even wanted to hear Jay Black & The Americans! I can’t remember the last time I had a request for “This Magic Moment” from someone under fifty before, no less a twenty-something-year-old. That was the kind of celebration this day was- anything and everything was welcome and worked with the Wedding DJ.

Big Smiles For The Wedding DJ

There is a point in every event that the professional Wedding, Party or Event DJ gets his/her reward for a job well done. You can see it in the smiles and posture of the guests at the party. They can’t help but let the great energy of celebration get the best of them. If no one is facing us, we see other forms of evidence if paying attention.  It is easy to be misguided by the packed dance floor. I have been at events when the dance floor is packed since people really want to dance even if they do not like the music the DJ is playing. Dancers will dance! It is the passion and excitement in how they dance that is a greater indicator of success for the professional Wedding DJ.

When I was younger, I used to worry that when too many people asked for requests it meant I was doing a bad job. This is not always so. Time and experience have taught me that often they are having so much fun that each new song gets them fired-up about another great song they want to hear. Requests can be an effeective means of determining success or failure as a professional DJ. The difference is how they ask.

A while back I was helping out another DJ at a wedding. The crowd kept shifting between wanting old and new music due to the varied ages of guests. Some folks were feeling avoided and angrily appraoched the Wedding DJ station with comments like, “Do you have any music from this decade?” or ” Do you know there was music invented before last month?”. These are indicators of the Wedding DJ missing what the crowd needs.

On Saturday night the requests were more like, “Wow! Marvin Gaye was great. Do you have any other Motown?” and “The Bride loved Pitbull so much she was wondering if you could also play his new song with Ne-Yo ‘Give Me Everything’? Please?” I played both Motown and Pitbull and they worked out great. The greatest reward for me was seeing The Bride smiling ear-to-ear.  At the end of the night, The Bride, Groom and her sister all gave me big hugs when I was leaving, as if they were about to lose their new best friend. It certainly made the ride home on the Garden Sate Parkway a breeze on that hot summer night from this beautiful outdoor, backyard Wedding DJ.

Popular Bridal Party Introduction Songs for Wedding DJs

Since I have been planning many weddings lately, I thought it would be a good idea to add a list of popular Bridal Party Songs for Wedding DJs. It is not inclusive of all the songs I have played but it gives people ann opportunity to look at what other couples found good songs to help inspire them to find their own.  As a professional Wedding DJ, The Bridal Party Songs are often the most fun since they have become a real party-type vibe these days. It used to be a rather solemn experience but not any more! It is becoming more and more popular for all the guests at the reception to be on their feet, clapping, cheering and having a great time as the Wedding DJ & MC Introduce them to the delight of their friends and family.

What great songs have I left off the list of Bridal Party Introduction Songs for Wedding DJs?

The Professional Wedding DJ Spins A Great Time!

I knew it was going to be a great day when we had our first warm and sunny day in weeks.  It was your basic dream wedding weather in May. I was already excited about providing professional Wedding DJ music and MC services for this fun and interesting couple, the sunshine was the finishing touch.

The wedding was being held at Rutgers Gardens i New Brunswick, NJ. If you have never been there, Rutgers Gardens is a gorgeous botanical garden near the Rutgers campus.  The caterers I had heard very positive reviews about, Twin Oaks Caterers, were all set-up by the time we arrived to get our gear ready and checked before the guests arrived at The Pavilion.

If I had any doubts otherwise, the excitement and energy from the guests towards the forthcoming music and dancing, the Wedding DJ request list was nearly three pages long before we even finished dinner!  The Best Man approached and gave me the OK that it was time to start cranking-up the music to begin the dancing for the night. They had given a clue of how much fun it would be during the playful manner they expressed for The First Dance. I had several requests from the younger folks for some old Motown tunes and that seemed a good place to start. Four songs later the dance floor was packed for the rest of the night. We moved from Motown to Prince to Daft Punk to Disco and a dose of The B-52s. It was a great night to be a professional Wedding DJ!

It is nights like this that remind why I am a professional Wedding DJ and why I am so passionate about what I do.

Professional Engagement Party DJ

As we move into the month of May, I am aware that this is the season for Wedding Engagement parties for a professional Wedding DJ. For anyone that has never been to a Wedding Engagement party before, they are great events. They have all the means for a lot of fun – toasts, romance, hope, friends and family, beautiful weather for outdoor events and of course great Engagement Party DJ music. They have many of the same elements for a great time that come with a Wedding without all the pressure and stress that many couples experience. They get to just show-up and enjoy the moment with everybody else.

One of the aspects that I appreciate most about Wedding Engagement parties as a professional Wedding DJ is the spirit of love and romance that flows throughout the day. It is hard not to feel the excitement and joy that the couple are sharing. It seems the Spring air just adds to the sense of a promise of a future that inspires all of us.

If you are planning your Wedding Engagement party, I invite you to hire a professional Wedding  DJ and share with them what you want the mood to be at your party. The Wedding Engagement party offers an opportunity to be more flexible and diverse in your choices of music and genres than what you may feel comfortable with at your wedding. This is your party and celebration. I encourage you to make it as fun and exciting as you can.  Let your musical selections drive your party exactly the way you have it in your mind. The best way to achieve this is through good communication with your professional Wedding DJ. If he/she understands what you want and how you want it, it will be a great day for all!

That is Not The Professional DJ We Booked!

It is your wedding day and you have been getting ready for this day since you first met each other. Everything is perfect; flowers, ceremony, photographer, table-setting, dress, tux, family arrived safe, just the way you planned it! It is time to enter the reception hall for the first time as husband and wife with all your friends and family waiting excitedly. You enter the room to cheers and glasses tapping and you see some guy standing behind the professional DJ equipment wearing a t-shirt and jeans that you have never met before pronouncing your name incorrectly. Who is this guy and what is he doing at our wedding? Where is the professional Wedding DJ we booked?

Funny scene right? Well, this happens more than you think. It has become a sad but somewhat common practice for professional Wedding DJ companies to sell you on one Wedding DJ and have another show up. The professional Wedding DJ that you picked was one you felt comfortable with and shared several phone conversations and emails. You discussed the music, your favorite songs and the ones you didn’t want to hear, order of events, dress code, pronunciation of family members names and all the professional Wedding MC duties till all three of you felt you were on the same page. Now some other guy is here who you have never met before DJing your wedding.

Hint #1: When signing your contract with your professional Wedding DJ, make certain it states which Wedding DJ will be the one providing services at your event. Do not let them choose for you, unless you get to make the final decision.  They can pick one out for you but make sure you are comfortable with the one they choose. It is your event, you get to choose. Chances are that a good professional agency will pick out the right Wedding DJ for you but it is still in your best interest to have the final say.

Hint #2: Have direct communication with your Wedding DJ before the event to make sure they have your playlist, special songs, order of events, names of those being announced, proper clothing (don’t laugh) and understand how you want the event to transpire. This is crucial. Even the best professional DJ wants to know before showing up what is expected and needed to perform their work effectively. Sure, we can improvise and do when necessary, but having a plan is helpful for all involved and limits misunderstandings at your event.

Hint #3: It is your event! You may have as much or as little input into your professional DJ service as you wish. Again, it is your event!

Remember, it is your event! This is your mantra: It is MY event!

What to Look for in A Professional Wedding DJ

Experience. Experience is the most important aspect of choosing a quality professional Wedding DJ for your wedding. A professional  Wedding DJ needs to have experience with DJing many kinds of events, and most importantly; weddings. Weddings have a certain rhythm and flow to them that can be overwhelming when you are new at providing professional DJ services for weddings.

Let’s face it, the intention is to do this only once and it has to be something that you and your guests walk away feeling like having experienced a slice of heaven for a day.  One of the least thought about but often key decisions is choosing a professional Wedding DJ. Your music and Wedding MC go along way towards making this a memorable and fun event for all. An experienced professional Wedding DJ has the skills and confidence to make certain that the bride and groom, and all their guests can appreciate the honoring of tradition and this moment at the same time. The right music can do this. There is a large gap between knowing music, spinning music and being able to meet the needs of those attending your wedding.

An experienced professional Wedding DJ will have very high quality equipment that is well taken care-of and looks appealing for your guests and photos.  Do you want your wedding photos to look like a concert hall? Of course not. Does your Wedding DJ look like a guy off the street or someone who respects you and their profession?

At the end of the day, it is YOUR wedding! Make certain your wedding DJ realizes how important this is to you and your guests. It is your music, your photos, your celebration. An experienced wedding DJ knows this and is ready to honor and embrace your needs and can do so seamlessly while having fun participating in this unique event.

Experience is the key to finding the right professional Wedding DJ for your wedding.

Dinner Music for Professional DJs

When playing music for a group as a professional DJ, dinner music can be either one of the easiest or most challenging aspects of a gig. How can dinner music be challenging you ask? Good question.

There are the ‘guest wars’ over volume and musical styles. Uncle Joe wants “Some nice old Italian music, you know, Jerry Vale and Frank Sinatra” and the Groom is concerned that “My Polish family will go crazy without any Polkas at a wedding” then the Bride, who booked the event to begin with wants “Slow, Soulful music” and the original playlist you discussed called for Western Classical music during dinner with some Smooth Jazz. You can see how this can be confusing. So what does a professional Wedding DJ do to satisfy all these contrasting tastes and requests?

Play them all!  Since the dinner potion of an event, especially a wedding, will last about an hour; this is when you can spread your wings and let them all get some airtime.  Maybe start with some Smooth Jazz and segue into some Slow, Soulful music. When that has run its course, a Polish Polka or two will make the Groom and his family happy knowing that a couple more Smooth Jazz tunes will be needed to transition to the Italian favorites Uncle Joe demanded. As dinner hits the main course, relaxing Classical Music is always a positive choice being mindful that many of these pieces will have slow gentle beginnings but full-bodied upbeat middles that may not be suitable for dinner music.  It is important to always pre-cue your selections and take a quick listen to make certain it is good dinner music for this event.

Dinner music is a time for letting people enjoy food, conversation, connecting, maybe even introductions and getting in the mood for whatever will follow.  The middle of dinner should be the mellowest of music with the coffee and desert portion moving a little bit more upbeat to segue into the danceable music to follow. Be warned though, if your music is too good, you may have people leaving their full plates and heading to the dance floor. I have experienced this several times as a professional Wedding DJ and am sure if it is a sign of doing a good job or taking from the event itself. You be the judge.

I encourage all new professional DJs to not fall into the habit that many professional DJs do of running dinner solely on Auto-Mix and not paying any attention to what is going on. Remember, dinner sets the mood for the event and you want to be sure everybody is being prepared for a great night! Watch and feel what is working with the guests even though they are not dancing.  Feel the vibe and energy and choose your selections accordingly. We are the entertainment and entertainers do not go on auto-pilot. Bring the same energy and focus to dinner as you do to the rest of the gig and it will provide the foundation for a successful event for everybody!

Professional DJs Need Good Clean Sound

One of the things that has been a quirk of mine is the need for good clean sound when providing music at an event as the professional DJ. I grew up with a Dad who was a bit of an audiophile and this was passed on to me. I have always had at least decent, if not more than decent audio equipment at home.

As a professional DJ, in some ways it is even more important to have high-end equipment that you can count on. For me, this is why I feel so comfortable using the Bose L1 Professional DJ System. I know what I am dealing with. Bose like Apple make good stuff. Working in a recording studio, we see a lot of equipment and get to know what holds up and is supported and what isn’t, Bose and Apple are two brands that we know what we are getting, know they work and are designed well. This kind of confidence is such a plus when showing up for a professional DJ gig with maybe only 30 minutes to set-up and get the system cranked up.

Good, clean sound. The Bose L1 system is just so clean. I feel like I am with the musicians while in the studio! I have heard things on the Bose L1 that I did not know were part of songs that I have been listening to for 30+ years and never heard before. To be able to produce that kind of sound in a PA system is unheard of. You can get the pounding and thunder in most systems, like a huge car stereo system. But not that kind of clarity and clean sound.  I have fiddled with this a bit when setting for gigs to test the acoustics of the room or space. Each time I start out by cranking up Prince’s “When Dives Cry” first. It has that guitar, percussion and clean sound that allows me to hear what I need to hear before everybody is present. When I have the time, I ask the other folks setting up for the event; wait staff, bartenders, catering crew, event coordinators, etc, what they want to hear while we are alone. The requests are varied, which allows me to hear the system with diverse music. One night it will be Mozart’s “Moonlight Sonata”, the next it will be U2’s “The Sweetest Thing” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and the next maybe they will want to hear MJ’s Thriller. It does not matter what they choose, I will have the music and more importantly, it will sound better than maybe anything they have ever heard before. Not that over-equalized, synthesized bass and treble sound that is popular with electronic systems today- it is good, clean sound that everyone will and does appreciate. You can feel it in your belly, it is that clean!

If you are a professional DJ and want the best for your events, I highly recommend the Bose L1 System with Bass and Tone Match.¨Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The L1 system also has a unique feature. It sounds equally good from all angles- front. sides and anywhere in between. This means that every table at the wedding will have the same quality of sound!   Why would we use anything else as a professional DJ?

A Professional DJ Prepping For A Gig

A recent professional DJ gig, the Hoboken International Film Festival, required a bit more preparation than I am accustomed. For this particular event, I needed to create a playlist for the acceptance of awards at the Awards Gala. These songs were needing to be for when the winners would walk up to receive their awards and then return to their seats after an acceptance speech. Sounds easy?  Maybe not so much. For each award, I needed to have a different song that ‘matched’ the feel for the award and had a dynamic beginning and intro to create energy for the award recepients and the crowd. In all there were 21 awards/songs needed. Coming up with a playlist for this took about 4-5 hours of searching through my nearly 250GB library for songs that met the criteria needed. Fortunately, it came out OK:)

Today I will be preparing a playlist for a HS graduation party on Saturday night.  This special young lady has very diverse taste for a teenager. Most teenagers when they say they have diverse taste, they usually mean they like several different forms of the same genre of pop music; dance/Top 40/club.  This particular young lady wants Grunge, Pop, Top 40, Country, Rock, Classic Rock, Sinatra, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Billy Idol and of course, Michael to go with Slides (Electric and Cha Cha), and current popular dance songs like Akon and PitBull. When I was her age my musical tastes were also diverse. Back then, this was not acceptable because music defined social groups more and there was little opportunity for stepping over social borders as there is today. I am excited about getting the opportunity to share in her big event. She has even let me know what songs she wants to dance with her Dad, boyfriend, best friend and a dedication to her Uncle who recently passed.

All this fun and I haven’t even gotten to the gig yet! Can’t wait to see what surprises the party itself will present.  Time to get back to putting some stuff together for Saturday night.
